95% of failed ERP projects have one thing in common

Companies whose ERP projects failed dedicated less than 10% of their total budget to ERP education.

On average, mid-sized companies spend $66,420 per year on their ERP system, and it roughly costs $75,000 for these same companies to implement their ERP.

The total cost of your ERP doesn’t end here though.

Lack of proper planning for ERP implementation also routinely leads to increased costs with ERP implementations overrunning their budget by 27% on average.

(first year cost of ERP + cost of implementation) + 27% budget overrun = $178,182

The new average cost for an ERP implementation for a mid-sized company becomes $178,182 when we factor in all these unexpected costs.

It’s not surprising that companies look to reduce costs during this process, typically opting to cut training costs and education fees to save money at the expense of their project success.

Despite this, research has found that employees who receive ERP training are more likely to use the system effectively leading to better project outcomes.

ERP preparation, training, and education cannot be unestimated or underinvested in for a successful project outcome.

Although 60% of ERP projects fail, many businesses also fail to achieve their goals during implementation.

75% of ERP implementations fail to meet their objectives

A further 63% of companies experienced delays in their implementation project.

With significant budgetary overruns and continued time delays in implementation, there is a real danger of a project failing due to improper planning.

At least 68% of companies report at least one negative impact to their business operations after an ERP implementation.

There are significant follow-on losses due to improper ERP implementation, or indeed failure.

  • Lost productivity: an incorrectly implemented system can result in lost sales, missed deadlines, production errors, and other setbacks

  • Lost revenue: losing customers over delays, or even losing out on revenue due to sales orders not being fulfilled correctly or on time. In a study, 20% of companies reported a loss of revenue due to a failed ERP implementation.

  • Reputational damage: customer complaints due to failures can impact brand and reputation leading to reduced customer retention and acquisition, in fact 29% of companies experienced customer complaints due to implementation failure.

  • Regulatory and legal issues: data breaches or other system failures can result in legal liabilities or regulatory fines, further increasing the costs associated with ERP failure.

Can you really afford for your ERP implementation to fail due to improper planning and lack of ERP education?
